This is the only Clannad cd I own, but about 4 hours after chewing open the shrinkwrap and on my 4th listening of the entire cd (it arrived today in the mail), I wonder why I waited so long to find this. I had a rough day at work and listening to this cd was like sitting under a cool waterfall on a hot day (cold beer optional)

The silver standard is a monetary system in which the standard economics|economic unit of account is a fixed weight of silver. It is analogous to the gold standard that has been used in various economies over time.The United States adopted a silver standard based on the "Spanish milled dollar" in 1785. This was codified in the 1792 Coinage Act (1792)|Mint and Coinage Act, and by the Federal Government of the United States|Federal Government's use of the "Bank of the United States" to hold its reserves, as well as establishing a fixed ratio of gold to the United States dollar|US dollar. This was, in effect, a derivative silver standard, since the bank was not required to keep silver to back all of its currency. This began a long series of attempts for America to create a bimetallic standard for the US Dollar, which would continue until the 1920s. Gold and silver coins were legal tender, including the Spanish real, a silver coin struck in the Western Hemisphere. Because of the! huge debt taken on by the US Federal Government to finance the American Revolution|Revolutionary War, silver coins struck by the government left circulation, and in 1806 Thomas Jefferson|President Jefferson suspended the minting of silver coins. The United States Department of the Treasury|US Treasury was put on a strict hard money standard, doing business only in gold or silver coin as part of the Independent Treasury Act of 1848, which legally separated the accounts of the Federal Government from the banking system. However the fixed rate of gold to silver overvalued silver in relation to the demand for gold to trade or borrow from England. The drain of gold in favor of silver led to the search for gold, including the "California Gold Rush" of 1849. Following Gresham's law, silver poured into the US, which traded with other silver nations, and gold moved out. In 1853 the US reduced the silver weight of coins, to keep them in circulation, and in 1857 removed legal tender! status from foreign coinage.In 1857 the final crisis of the f! ree bank ing era of international finance began, as American banks suspended payment in silver, rippling through the very young international financial system of central banks. In the United States this collapse was a contributory factor in the American Civil War, and in 1861 the US government suspended payment in gold and silver, effectively ending the attempts to form a silver standard basis for the dollar. Through the 1860–1871 period various attempts to resurrect bi-metallic standards were made, including one based on the gold and silver franc, however, with the rapid influx of silver from new deposits, the expectation of scarcity of silver ended.The interaction between central banking and currency basis formed the primary source of monetary instability during this period. The combination that produced economic stability was restriction of supply of new notes, a government monopoly on the issuance of notes directly and indirectly, a central bank and a single unit of value. ! Attempts to evade these conditions produced periodic monetary crisis — as notes devalued, or silver ceased to circulate as a store of value, or there was a depression as governments, demanding specie as payment, drained the circulating medium out of the economy. At the same time there was a dramatically expanded need for credit, and large banks were being chartered in various states, including, by 1872, Japan. The need for a solid basis in monetary affairs would produce a rapid acceptance of the gold standard in the period that followed.

IntroductionClinical surveillance refers to the act of surveilling a clinical syndrome that have a significant impact on public health. Such techniques have been used in particular for infectious diseases. Many large institutions, such as the WHO, or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have created data bases, and modern computer systems that can tract and monitor emerging outbreaks of illnesses such as influenza, SARS, HIV, to biologic terrorism, such as the recent Anthrax attack on the post office system in the United States. Many states have cancer registries to monitor the incidence of cancers to determine the prevalence, and possible cause of these illnesses.Other illnesses such as chronic diseases such as obesity, and diabetes, as well as social illness such as domestic violence, are increasingly being integrated into epidemiologic data bases that are being used in Cost Benefit Analysis in determining governmental funding for research and prevent! ion. The benefits of such data cannot be underscored, but much of the statistics involves attaching worth to human lives, or years lived, with complex concepts as the converging of survival, quality of life, and productivity measures. The promotion of population based health care, that designed to reach an entire population, increasingly is integrated with converging registries, and outcomes increasingly being monitored as measurement of performance is a form of clinical surveillance.

Harl is a Scotland|Scottish term describing a building technique.It means to render (cover, as in plastering) stonework using small pebbles or fine chips of stone. A base of lime render is applied to the bare stone wall (which should be correctly pointed between joints), and whilst still wet a specially shaped trowel is used to throw the pebbles onto the lime surface, then lightly pressed into it. After setting, the harl may be lime washed in various colours using traditional paints (not modern barrier paints).
Cement base renders are also incorrect, as these form an impermeable barrier to moisture - when the inevitable cracking occurs during cold weather, water is trapped behind the surface and penetrates inside the softer stone, thus causing rapid deterioration.

Clinker_brick


Clinker bricks are bricks used in the construction of buildings. They were originally discarded because they were discolored or distorted. In early brick firing kilns, those wet bricks too close to the fire changed into the volcanic textures and darker/purplish colors of clinker bricks. Modern brickmaking techniques produce a more consistent, if boring, product. Around 1900, these bricks were discovered by architects to be usable, distinctive and charming in architectual detailing, adding the earthy quality favored by Arts & Crafts style designers. Clinker bricks were made famous by the Pasadena, California, architecture firm Greene & Greene who used them (often in combination with native rocks) in walls, foundations, and chimneys. The name "clinker brick" is said to come from the sound that they would make when banged together, being heavier than regular bricks, however this term is also used for the hardened residue of coal fires, that can have a similar texture.

Gyokuro (玉露 ''gyokuro'' or "jewel dew") is a fine Green tea from Japan. Its flavor is generally sweet and delicate with notes of grass. Selected from a grade of green tea known as ''tencha'' (天茶), Gyokuro's name refers to the pale green color of the infusion.Some time before gyokuro is harvested, the tea plants are covered with shades, which slows down the leaf growth, increases the amount of caffeine, and makes the leaves a bit darker, with a bolder green color, than most green teas.Considered the highest grade of tea available in Japan, Gyokuro is usually quite expensive and not widely available. Most of this premium tea is grown in the Uji area of Japan.Matcha, which is used in the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu), is made by grinding gyokuro into a fine powder. It is then mixed with water using a whisk.

Personally, I really like this book as it seems to be very thorough.Definitely a must-have book for the advanced Japanese learner who needs to learn the Kanji, in addition to just the vocabulary translation.I often refer to this book just to find out what the kanji for a word is. Not meant to be a pocket dictionary, but a REFERENCE dictionary. For example, the word raspberry shows in katakana, "ki-i-chi-go", plus the kanji with the furigana above, plus the common katakana pronunciation "ra-zu-be-ri".For many words, especially those with multiple or varied meanings, it will give examples (even sentences too) in both English and Japanese, with kanji and furigana. Very helpful! The only negative about this book, is that the Japanese to English section is in hiragana (as opposed to romaji).So to look up a Japanese word, it may be very difficult for beginners to use, unless you already have the hiragana a i u e o ka ki ku ke ko down already, plus knowing how to read the hiragan! a.For quick look-up (and laziness) I would prefer to look up a Japanese word by the abc alphabet way. I would say that this is only for the serious Japanese learner with intermediate/advanced capabilities.If you are simply studying for a Japanese class for a few semesters and are not totally serious, you don't need such in-depth explanations, I would recommend something cheaper and easier to read.At a regular price of $60, there are much cheaper and much simpler books.

Furigana



Furigana (ふりがな), are a Japanese language|Japanese reading aid. They consist of smaller kana printed next to a kanji or other character to indicate its pronunciation. In horizontal text, ''Yokogaki and tategaki|yokogaki'', they are placed above the line of text; in vertical text, ''Yokogaki and tategaki|tategaki'', they are placed to the right of the line of text. They are one type of ruby characters|ruby text. ''Furigana'' are also known as yomigana or rubi in Japanese.

Furigana may be added by character, in which case the part of a word which corresponds to a kanji is centered over that kanji; or by word or phrase, in which case the entire ''furigana'' word is centered over several characters, even if the kanji do not represent equal shares of the kana needed to write them. The latter method is more common, especially since some words in Japanese have ateji|unique pronunciations that are not related to any of the characters the word is written with.When it is necessary to distinguish between native Japanese ''kanji|kun'yomi'' and Chinese language|Chinese-derived ''Kanji|on'yomi'' pronunciations, for example in Kanji dictionary|kanji dictionaries, the Japanese pronunciations are written in hiragana, and the Chinese ones are written in katakana. However, this distinction is really only important in dictionaries and other reference works. In ordinary prose, the script chosen will usually be hiragana.
